Michel Plasson is often associated with Bizet, Gounod, Massenet, Ravel, Berlioz. Whether in concerts or recordings, he has always maintained the flame of music, especially French music
He is a traditionalist in the best sense of the word: a clear, precise, dynamic, balanced execution matters more to him than the search or the expression of any more or less imaginary meaning. Great ambassador of the French music, he said in an interview: "Our music is very vulnerable. Everything depends on a phrasing, a certain way of taking the sound, of catching it with this very French expressive restraint, so subtle. Debussy, when you carry it in the wrong way, it becomes ashes. This is one of the great beauties and one of the great weaknesses of this music." [article Figaro, by Thierry Hillériteau]
After working in the United States with Erich Leinsdorf, Pierre Monteux and Léopold Stokowski, Michel Plasson was appointed musical director in Metz and in 1968, permanent conductor at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse, where he became music director, then artistic director in 1973 and for 30 years. He was the principal conductor of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra for seven years. He is currently chief conductor of the Chinese National Symphony Orchestra in Beijing.
Michel Plasson has conducted the greatest institutions in the world of music, with orchestras and opera companies in Milano, Moscow, Paris, London, Zurich, Geneva, Leipzig, Berlin and Munich, in the United States, Canada, China and Japan. His repertoire of choice remains that of French music (more than a hundred recordings merely on EMI, bear witness to this); Let us quote Carmen, Manon, Faust, Werther, Romeo and Juliet, The Cid, The Trojans, The Damnation of Faust, Werther, Penelope, among many other works.
In 1990, he was awarded the Grand Prix Florence-Gould by the Académie des Beaux-Arts of the Institute de France, and the 1995 Grand Prix of the international music press.
