Conductors

What makes working with conductor Sander Teepen such a special experience? How does he stay himself, and what makes orchestras and musicians appreciate his method and results so much?

Sander Teepen inspires and connects! He knows how to transmit his love for music to musicians and audiences with stimulating energy. Sander gets performers to outperform themselves. With his spontaneous and friendly way of working and sound knowledge, he creates an atmosphere in which orchestra and soloists can excel. As promising talent, he is acclaimed for his accessibility, and the appreciative and positive way in which he conducts rehearsals.

Sander Teepen was born in Deurne (The Netherlands, 1981) into a musical family. He started playing with the oboe at the age of 8, and went onto study at the Fontys conservatory under Herman Vincken. He played oboe with the Residentie Orkest, Philharmonie Zuid-Nederland, The Gelders Orchestra, The Brabants Orchestra and the Limburg Symphony Orchestra. In addition, he is connected to the Anemos Arts Ensemble, composed of musicians from Philharmonie Zuidnederland.

Sander was quickly fascinated by conducting. He followed conducting classes under Jan Stulen, Otto Tausk, Jac van Steen and others. He went on to take part in master classes led by Jorma Panula, Paavo Jarvi, Neeme Jarvi and Leonid Grin. His conducting style is inspired by Carlos Kleiber as well as the enthusiasm and commitment of the players.

“In addition to his technical talent as conductor, he also has great empathy for those around him. He reassures those around him, and has a seemingly inexhaustible supply of positive energy.” – André Heuvelman, solo trumpeter, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra

“In the projects in which I performed, Sander’s immense energy and humor were very inspiring. In addition, it’s always a great feeling for a soloist when you find that a conductor has technical and musical qualities which make it possible to do, almost literally, whatever you want. “ – Perry Hoogendijk, solo-tuba player, Royal Concertgebouworkest

Since 2012, Sander participated in various conductor competitions and walked away with various prizes. For example, in 2012 he won the conductors contest at the MAV Symphonic Orchestra in Budapest, in 2013 the prize at the Blue Danube Opera conductor contest, in 2014 the “George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra Prize” at the Jeunesses Musicales Bucharest conductor contest, and in 2015 he came second in the Blue Danube Opera conductor contest. This led to various collaborations at home and abroad. This is how he came to conduct opera houses in Ostrava and Stara Zagora, and was host conductor at the Moldova Philharmonic Orchestra in Iasi and the Banatul Philharmonic Orchestra in Timisoara. In 2017, he conducted his successful debut at The Residentie Orchestra, the Metropole Orchestra and The Gelders Orchestra.

In 2017/2018 he will debut at Philharmonie Zuidnederland and the North Dutch Orchestra following on from being guest conductor at The Residentie Orchestra, the Metropole Orchestra, the Moldova Philharmonic Orchestra, the Banatul Philharmonic Orchestra and the Divadlo Antonina Opera House Dvoraka Ostrava.
