“To me, the score reads like a story. It’s my great wish together with the orchestra’s musicians to share that story with the audience. That’s something that gives me an enormous drive.”
Wouter Vossen has been Concertmaster since he was 21. He is the kind of person who grows under pressure and he has been lucky to receive a strict training by Herman Krebbers. This prepared him to work at young age with great, demanding and exciting conductors. Wouter has developed a special musical bond and friendship with Jaap van Zweden, Philip Herreweghe and Myung Wung Chung. Every time it feels very inspiring to work with them, learn from them.
What they like about Wouter is that he is always well prepared. He brings his skills with a very positive energy and temperament, which might be the reason why they trusted him to lead their orchestras in chamber orchestra programs.
Leading/Conducting:
Wouter prefers to lead orchestras from his first Concertmaster chair. Having no conductor shifts responsibility and initiative to each individual player. It triggers creativity. By encouraging the musicians to be standing on their feet, Wouter tries to create optimal freedom of movement and boost their energy.
Artistic Management:
In his position as Concertmaster of the Residentie Orchestra he enjoys discussing programs and out of the box ideas with the management. One of the biggest challenges in the classical music scene is to draw younger generations to the concert halls.
Undeniable, the Covid-19 virus pandemic has turned everything upside down. But Wouter believes that a live performance is still incredible powerful and will always be appreciated, maybe now even more than before.
Storioni Trio:
25 years ago Wouter Vossen has raised the Storioni Trio, together with his brother Marc and pianist Bart van der Roer. One of the highlights in their career is the recording of all Beethoven trio’s, inclusive of the Triple Concerto. The trio has performed this concerto worldwide with many orchestras. Also they have commissioned composers to write new triple concertos for them, to be premiered at their Storioni Festival.
